Since then, I've spent that time listening to the next five albums and their b-sides. I started with his first album and listened as he "became Prince" over the next two. I've known some of his hits for 20 years, but never dug too deep. Right now, and for the last two months my obsession has been Prince. Maybe diving into hip hop will lead you to classic funk/r&b/soul. Find an album that seems appealing and go crazy. Check out some of the many lists available from Rolling Stone/Pitchfork,or the like. Be it Hip Hop, Rock, Pop, Folk, Country, etc. It was crazy rewarding.įigure out what your ear is craving at the moment. Last year though, I decided to thoroughly explore their work beginning with when the classic lineup first got together.

I've heard Fleetwood Mac my entire life, given their hits have been radio mainstays for damn near 50 years. It could be one that I'm very familiar with. I'll also pick certain artists or groups and explore their entire discographies. I love tracing the evolution of popular music through genre and time. Then, perhaps, I'll check out other genres in that decade to see what was running parallel to it.maybe they took influence from each other. Then maybe I'll go back a decade and see how it evolved since then. I like picking certain genres that I'm interested in and exploring. Nothing embarrassing about that list, it's exciting really because of all the great stuff available for you. That said, the biggest thing I can emphasize is to find what you like, and keep on liking that. A bunch of outlets, from big publications to your local record store, will also have a "favorite new releases" section the better you know the people putting that together, the more you know if it'll be your thing. I'm also a fan of Bandcamp Daily for unearthing more indie stuff. In terms of more curated stuff: NPR Music does a lot of good stuff if their existing set of recommendations are your vibe, you'll find that to be immensely useful. A fun jumping off point is LCD Soundsystem's "Losing My Edge" - the song pokes fun at the band's self-identity as too cool hipsters, but devolves into singer James Murphy shouting his influences as the beat drowns him out (as he gets slapped in the face repeatedly). Some bands make their influences obvious, and it's fun going down the rabbit hole, especially in the age of streaming music where a lot of those influences are available instantly without extra payment required. Whereas if I'm listening to Hyperpop, I would be ok with just listening to a few tracks from an artist, because that kind of music is all about catchy hooks that don't necessarily have to be listened to in proper order.Ĭlick to shrink.100% this.

If I'm listening to something like Black Metal, I will probably try listening to an entire album start to finish, as that kind of music tends to be more focused on providing a certain mood over a series of tracks. Spotify Radio specifically is almost uncanny in how it will show you bands and artists that you've never heard of but have precisely the kind of sound that you enjoy.Īs per listening to albums vs listening to individual tracks - I think this is really dependent on genre. With that in mind, as others have suggested I think one of the best resources you can have these days is Spotify Radio and YouTube Mixes. But I do think it can be really fun to broaden your horizons, I was a die-hard metal head as a teenager but as I grew older I start branching out more and started finding other genres that sounded completely different but matched a similar energy. Honestly I think the main thing is just to listen to what you like and don't let anybody tell you that you're a "noob" for doing so.
